Firebacks are used to contain the fire and prevent damage to the structural brickwork of the chimney. They can be highly decorative as in some cast iron backs or highly functional as in the case of the traditional Milner fireclay design.
In deciding which type of fireback to have there are two important factors to note.
For Gas there is no restriction as to materials. The full range of ceramic fibre, fondue, cast iron and fire clay is available.
For Modern Smokeless Fuel you will need to have either a fondue or a fireclay back as the heat and fumes from the fire will be too aggressive for ceramic fibre and cast iron.
For Wood a Devon fireback is available which comes with a purpose designed bottom piece that is hollowed out so that the wood can burn more slowly on a bed of ash.
Original Georgian and Early Victorian fires tended to have cast iron firebacks and often the decoration of the insert was continued through to the fireback making it an important feature.
Later fires started to use cast iron frames with fireclay bricks inserted or drop in plates of cast iron where the heaviest wear takes place. Eventually the cast frames were dropped in favour of the longer lasting fire clay mouldings, sometimes imprinted with a makers mark.
Fireclay starts as a yellowish colour but soon ages and darkens with the soot.
Fondue firebacks are made from a high alumina cement using ground fireclay as a filler and usually start as a pale grey colour.
No matter what fuel and what materials are used in your fireplace they will need to dry out thoroughly before you light a fire. It is best to build up the size of fire and length of time it is on gradually after a new installation as any residual moisture will try to evaporate when it gets heated with sometimes drastic consequences.

Devon fireback ****Chris the sizes of the bottom half are wrong see orig. sizes blurb*****
The classic Devon fireback is made from fondue filled with ground fireclay and is designed specifically for wood burning. The hollowed out base section means that the wood burns on a bed of ash which is much more fuel efficient and slower burning than on a raised grate.
Devon firebacks are available in either 16 or 18 inch fire opening sizes.
(Add 2 inches (5cm) to the width dimensions given for the size of the 18 inch fireback).
